 Salisbury Cathedral London
Salisbury Cathedral or Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an Anglican cathedral located in Salisbury and is one of the best examples of 12th century English Architecture. The cathedral has a 123 meters high church spire and is the tallest in the United Kingdom. Bishop Richard Poore was the architect of the Cathedral. The Cathedral contains the world's oldest working clock dating back to 1386. The Cathedral also has one of the four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta often called Magna Carta Libertatum or Great Charter. The Cathedral celebrated it 750th anniversary of consecration in 2008 and is also the seat of the Bishop of Salisbury.
The construction of the cathedral started on 28 April 1220 and was completed in 1280. In 1386 a large mechanical clock was installed at Salisbury Cathedral and it is the oldest surviving mechanical clock in Britain. The clock has no face because all clocks of that ear were only intended to ring the bells at each hour interval.
The cathedral has been the inspiration and the subject of many of painter John Constable’s famous paintings. The Cathedral is also home to an organ which was built in 1877 by Henry Willis & Sons.
