 Millennium Bridge
The Millennium Bridge is a footbridge or can be called a pedestrian bridge and is built for people to cross the River Thames. The bridge links Bankside to the City. The bridge connects Globe Theatre, the Bankside Gallery and Tate Modern to the St Paul's Cathedral.
The bridge was opened for public on 10th June 2000 and is 325 meters long. The steel suspension bridge can support the walking load of 5000 people at one time. It was opened with much of funfair and was also included on the route of a charity walk. More then 90,000 people crossed the bridge on the very first day with crowd surplus of 2,000 on the bridge at any one time. The design of the bridge came out of a contest and the winning entry was an innovative "blade of light" effort from Arup, Foster and Partners and Sir Anthony Caro.
The bridge had to be shut in just two days after opening due to the unexpected lateral vibration which caused a wobbly effect and the Londoners nicknamed the bridge the Wobbly Bridge. The bridge was shut till 22nd Feb 2002, and some modifications had to be carried out to reduce the lateral vibrations. Five million pounds went in the coast of this modification and post the changes the bridge has worked fine.
