 London Zoo

London Zoo which opened in was opened on April 27, 1828 located in Regent's Park is the world's oldest scientific zoo. It was originally opened as a collection for scientific study and opened its door to public in 1847. London Zoo is home 15,104 animals classified under 755 species.

The key areas and attractions of the zoo are African Bird Safari, Aquarium, Blackburn Pavilion, B.U.G.S, Butterfly Paradise, Children's Zoo, Clore Rainforest Lookout, Gorilla Kingdom, Into Africa, Komodo Dragons, Mappin Terraces, Meet The Monkeys, Reptile House, Round House, Snowdon Aviary, Zoo World and Others.

Some of the exhibits in the African Bird Safari are Abdim's stork, superb starlings, Madagascar teals, Von der Decken's hornbills, lilac-breasted roller and blue-bellied roller. The trip through this section takes you on a walk-through which its over 50 meters long and 10 meters, has a bridge over a stream and high trees. The word 'aquarium' originates at London Zoo and the world’s first aquarium was built at the London Zoo in 1853. The aquarium to home to many species including rudd, European eels, pink sea fans, spiny starfish, seahorses, copperband butterflyfish, clownfish, electric eels, glass knifefish, lungfish, stingray, catfish, tucunare, tambaqui and pirapitinga.

The Blackburn Pavilion recreates a rainforest and cloud forest environments. The pavilion is home to over 50 different species of bird. Some of the exhibits at the pavilion include toucans, starlings, kookaburras, lovebirds, and hummingbirds. The Pavalion exhibits several extinct species like socorro dove. B.U.G.S or Biodiversity Underpinning Global Survival showcases biodiversity, and is home to over 140 species with the majority of them being invertebrates. Some of the displays include leaf-cutter ants, Mexican redknee tarantulas, flamboyant flower beetles, anteaters and Malaysian giant stick insects. Butterfly Paradise as the name says is home to different species of butterflies from various continents.

Children's Zoo provides a hands-on experience to children and has various events to improve learning. Clore Rainforest Lookout take you to the Amazon rain forest and some of the displays include are two-toed sloths, agoutis, silvery marmosets, golden-headed lion tamarins, Goeldi’s monkeys, Geoffroy’s marmosets, pottos, slow loris, slender loris, emperor tamarins, gentle lemurs and Pygmy Marmosets. Gorilla Kingdom is one of the largest sections covering 6000 square meters and is home to western lowland gorillas, black-and-white colobus monkey, mangabeys, monitor lizards, a variety of bird species, Diana monkeys and Gabon’s.

Into Africa takes visitors face-to-face with the giraffes and visitors can also have a glimpse of Zebras, African Hunting Dogs, warthog, okapi and red river hogs. Komodo Dragons as the name suggests is home to world largest lizard species, The Komodo Dragon.

When Mappin Terraces was opened it provided visitors a unique experience of the wildlife on the high snow covered mountains and Arctic, some of the animals exhibited were Polar bears, Ibex, Snow Leopards. These days it displays the Australian outback, featuring animals like wallabies and emus. Meet The Monkeys recreates the Bolivian Rainforest with exhibits like black-capped squirrel monkeys. Reptile House houses lizards, tortoises, crocodiles and snakes. The Round House has a mechanism that allows the enclosure to rotate and allows the visitors to either view the inside or outside enclosure. It is home to orangutans, macaques, binturong, koalas and gorillas.

Snowdon Aviary take you to the world of magnificent birds and some of the inhabitants’ are green peafowl, sacred ibis, little egrets, cattle egrets, night herons, waldrapp, ducks, pigeons and African grey-headed gulls. Zoo World was designed as a home for Elephant’s and Rhino’s but now its home to bearded pigs, Bactrian camels and pygmy hippos.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Turtle Diary, An American Werewolf in London and The Pumpkin Eater are some of the motion pictures which have been shot at the London Zoo. There are also plans to increase the sections by adding sections like Frog World.
