 Greenwich
Greenwich is located in South London, just 6 miles away from Central London and is home to Maritime Greenwich a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is famous for its concentration and quality of buildings of historic and architectural interest and is on the South bank of the river Thames. World wide Greenwich is also famous for Greenwich / Prime Meridian (0° longitude) and
Greenwich Mean Time.
Greenwich is also home to the world renowned Trinity College of Music and also The Royal palace, the Palace of Placentia which was built in the 15th century.
The National Maritime Museum is located in Greenwich and it’s the largest museum of its kind in the world, it is also a world heritage site as its part of the Royal Observatory and the Queen’s House which dates back to the seventeenth century. The museum came into existence in 1937 when the museum was inaugurated by King Gorge VI on 27th April. It was opened in the building which was formally known as Royal Hospital School also known as Royal Naval School.

The museum holds over two million items which include maritime art, cartography, manuscripts including official public records, ship models and plans, scientific and navigational instruments, instruments for time-keeping and astronomy. The museum draws over two million visitors annually. The museum also helps in organizing exhibitions around UK.
One can reach Greenwich by road or by tube or using one of the ferry operators from the Greenwich Pier. |
