 Covent Garden- A Spicy
Entertainment Zone
Covent Garden is full of shops, street performers, and entertainment facilities, and also serves as an entrance to the Royal Opera House. A small settlement was in existent sonce first century AD, at the time of Romans. By 7th century it had become an important and busy trading post, in control of Saxon and was called Lundenwic. Its was abandoned during the Viking attacks in the 9th century.
The name Covent Garden came into existence in the 13th century during the reign of King John. It was acutely a large kitchen garden for the Covent and for the next 700 years the garden flourished as a major supplier of fruits and vegetables in London.
The fourth Earl of Bedford in 1630 appointed architect Inigo Jones, who designed and constructed Covent Garden’s Piazza, the first open square in England.

In the 17th century the Covent Garden emerged as an entertainment centre when the first Punch and Judy shows were staged. These shows continued for the next two centuries attracting many writer and artists. Covent Garden became synonym to acting and opera. Theatre Royal on Drury Lane became the most popular destination, many other theatres came up in the area including the Aldwych, Adelphi Theatre, Institute of Contemporary Arts , the Lyceum, Novello Theatre, Vaudeville, the Duchess, the New London, the Coliseum, the Fortune and the Donmar.
Covent Garden has the honor of having the oldest restaurant in London, Rules was established on Maiden Lane. The restaurant is still is still a popular especially for those found of English food specializing in game. In 1904 a foreign flower market was opened on the south side, at Jubilee Hall. Covent Garden was used as the backdrop for one of the most famous film of its time ‘My Fair Lady’.
The Jubilee market is great place to shop British hand-made arts and crafts. Fashion Fringe at Covent Garden is the hottest thing to hit British fashion in the last 20 years, started six year ago is chaired by the likes of Donatella Versace.
